The Napoleonic InvasionThis model is a part of the exhibit: The Napoleonic Invasion. Napoleon gathered in Boulogne and other ports along the French Channel coast a fleet of over 2000 boats of all sizes capable of landing an army of 170,000 with 9,000 horses. This is an example of a smaller barge. Redoubts and Citadels covered the ports of Chatham and Dover. Along the beaches a chain of round 32 foot high towers with 13 foot thick walls were built. Each mounted a heavy gun on the roof and were manned by a platoon of soldiers. These "Martello Towers" were so called after a tower in Corsica which had successfully held up a British attack in 1794.
